Christmas Wish list Pt. 2
Now that the holiday shopping season is in full effect, golf shops across the country are clearing out last years clubs for new and improved models. This presents the opportunity for golfers to pick up some great deals on some great clubs. Last month we looked into a variety of different drivers on the market right now. This month we are hitting the rest of the bag: woods, irons, and putters. Unfortunately there have not been any noticeable advances in golf tee design, but as soon as those advances are made, USGolfer.net will be the first to break the story.
We will start this Wish list off with the second most dangerous clubs in a golfers bag, the fairway woods. If you are like many golfers I know, hitting one of these fairway woods bridges the gap between golf and baseball. You start off with a golf swing but by the time the ball lands youre running towards first begging your homer to stay fair or praying that your grounder at least makes it out of the infield. Like anything in golf, there seem to be limitless possibilities when it comes to choosing a set of fairway woods. We will try to make your life a little easier.
This first list is for those high-end fairway woods with good performance priced upwards of $200 per club. This list was assembled through professional evaluation and through user feedback. The best performers are found at the top of the list, however, all these clubs perform well:
1. Yonex Rekin Super Blaster $450
2. Taylor Made Supersteel $200
3. Ping Ti3 $350
4. Callaway Hawkeye FW $350
5. Titliest 975F $250
The mid-range clubs that follow range in price from $ 100 to $200 a piece, but due to the holiday season many of these clubs can be found for a greatly reduced price:
1. Adams TL2 Smart 3 $100
2. Natural Golf Copper $150
3. Louisville Golf Niblick $100
4. Purespin FW $175
5. Orlimar Trimetal FW $150
6. Cobra Gravity Back $190
7. Adams TL Tour $135
8. Wilson Fatshaft Metal Matrix $150
One golf area that is never short on club options is the Iron market. A golfer can get titanium heads oversized, cast, forged, graphite shafts, stiff, steel, etc
To simplify the choices we will give a basic outline of club choices depending on a golfers handicap range and what the golfer needs out of the Iron set they choose. As a general rule oversized Irons are great for high handicap golfers who need a lot of forgiveness out of a club while forged irons are for those low handicap players that wont mishit a shot and would like more control. Midsize Irons fall in-between these two cases and offer the best of both worlds: Good control and Forgiving for those mishits. Therefore we have ranked these clubs based on their design and evaluated them in comparison with other Irons of the same type. Again, only the best performers are listed:
Mid sized Irons
1. Ping I/3 Blades $880
2. Adams GT irons $799
3. Taylor Made 300 series Irons $799
4. Top-Flite Tour Titanium $1480
5. Cobra CXI Irons $825
6. Callaway X-14 $699
Oversized
1. Ping i/3 O-Size $880
2. Callaway Big Bertha Titanium $2000
3. Titliest 981 $900
4. Yonex Rekin Super II $2500
5. Callaway X-12 $649
6. Taylor Made Firesole $1000
7. Wilson FatShaft Hypercarbon $1060
Forged
1. Mizuno MP-29 $999
2. Hogan Apex plus $1000
3. Hogan Apex Forged Blade $1000
4. MacGregor Tourney PMB Tour $1500
5. Yonex Super ADX Tour Forged $1360
Well if you chose the right Irons and Fairway Woods properly, you shouldnt need the next club up for review. Then again 40% of the shots that occur during a round of golf occur on the green. So maybe you could use an edge on the green as well. Surprisingly, a club that rarely hits a ball further than 30 ft can still cost you an arm and a leg. While they dont cost as much as the drivers, putters can very easily jump right into the fairway wood price range. Man thats a lot for so little. Heres a rating and pricing breakdown of some of the top performing putters out right now. Because there are so many different styles of putters available for each company, this list is a general ranking of those companies that excel in the putting department:
Putters
1. Titliest Scotty Cameron $250
2. C-Groove $145
3. Never Compromise $140
4. SeeMore $170
5. Taylor Made Nubbins $100
6. Wilson Fatshaft $120
7. Carbite Polar Balanced $130
8. Odyssey $115
9. RailGun $200
Hopefully all this tedious work will benefit some golfer out there in cyberspace. If not it was at least informative for the writer. Till next month, Happy Holidays and may the Golf gods shine brightly on you all in the New Year. Keep those receipts from those ugly sweaters youre sure to receive this year. Its going to take a lot of them to afford some of these new toys.
