Golf Movies

The tragedy in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania has seemed to impact every American, whether they knew any of the victims personally or not. As I type this now I still find it hard to think about golf or anything other than the events of September 11. It sadly has affected the way many people view Arab Americans and Muslims. To those that saw the events unfold on TV, the whole event seemed like a scene out of a movie. In times like these movies can be a form of escapism that helps us cope when life is stranger than fiction, With this in mind, it seemed appropriate to crown the greatest golf movie of all time.
To win this illustrious title the movie must meet the following requirements:
1. The movie must center on the game of golf, No "Navy Seals" screwing around on golf carts.
2. The movie must have been released in theatres within the last 30 years. Our apology to Tim Conway’s classic "Dorf on Golf".
3. The winning Movie is the film that has the highest replay value.
4. It must also cross generational barriers. If it’s only enjoyable to 13 year old boys its "NO GOOD"
5. And the number one rule is the film must be FUN!

Here are the contestants and where they finished:

5th Place: "Caddy Shack 2"- Not nearly as enjoyable as the original and seems to taint the original just by its existence.

4th Place: "The legend of Bagger Vance"- A fairly good movie except for Will Smith who seems to push his "true Authentic swing" idea a bit too much. Sorry Bagger, Better luck next time.

3rd Place: "Happy Gilmore"- A very funny film but some of the golfing public might find Adam Sandler a bit too much to handle and the ending is a little week in my book. The movie however does win the honor of the best Golf Fight Scene.

2nd Place: "Tin Cup"- Could arguably be considered the best all around golf movie and for some of us Kevin Costner’s best performance to date. Unfortunately though it just looses out on the FUN Factor. The Winning film is just too much fun.

King of the Links: "Caddy Shack"- This film manages to be so much fun, the fact that the film is entirely implausible matters little. The oldest film in the group easily stands the test of time and is as funny today as it was over twenty years ago when it was first released. The cast is amazing and the film has become a piece of pop culture much like other films from the late 70’s and early 80’s. I can’t say enough about this movie; it is simply the greatest golf movie of all time.
