New Year’s Resolutions

Well, it’s that wonderful time of year again. Time for people all around the world to celebrate the close of another year and ponder ways to improve the next year in between sips of champagne and chugs of beer. Year after year the cycle repeats itself. In euphoric hazes from excessive alcohol consumption, men and women declare ways they will improve themselves in the next year with little regard for the actual work involved. Once morning comes around it hits them, they’ve just vowed to quit 5 things they love and start doing 10 others that they hate. Then the post-New Year’s hangover sets in. How in the heck are they going to accomplish and stay focused on these resolutions? Answer: They won’t. They won’t last a week maybe two before they spout off, "To he--with this crap! This is way too much work and I hate it."

This year, why not make a resolution you enjoy keeping. Why not resolve to better your golf game. There are many ways to do this whether it is to better one’s chipping, putting, driving or just resolve to play smarter golf. Every golfer can improve their game regardless of their skill level. That is the beauty of golf. Whether one is a regular hack who spends hours in the woods, or a scratch golfer who has trouble with ten foot putts, there is always room for improvement. Here are some different "Golf Resolutions".

"I resolve to eliminate those bad mishits and shanks that occur during a golf round." -
To do this a golfer must work on being consistent with his or her setup and swing. Keeping your head down is also advised. One wrong yank up with your head and you’ll need a shovel to find your ball. To accomplish this a golfer will have to spend more hours on the course working on their swing setup, which means more time on the golf course. It’s a price that must be paid no matter how much you hate going to the course and playing a round of golf.

"I resolve to make better putts" –
This one can be done without playing more rounds of golf. It could require that a golfer go shopping for a better putter. It’s painful but in some cases it is needed. Once a golfer has his or her new putter they must spend more time practicing putts on the practice green before each golf round. Because courses can have many different speeds of greens, it is important to spend time on the practice green before the round, getting a feel for the speed and break of the putts. One other way a golfer can better their putting skills is to install a practice green at their home. Luckily, we at USGolfer.net have already done the research for golfers on installing home putting greens. This information can be found in our archived articles.

"I resolve to hit the ball straighter off the tee" –
This one can be done with a few extra trips to the driving range and spending more time developing a constant routine for one’s setup at the tee. A few extra rounds of golf would also help to get the feel of maintaining a good routine during an actual round of golf. This is actually harder than just hitting consistently on the driving range. The driving range may have hitting mats, which have a different feel than that of an actual tee box on a real golf course. Unfortunately, this does mean that more trips to the course could be needed. Painful, I know.

These are just a few examples of different resolutions that could be made this year. Feel free to make your own, but remember you have to put in the time no matter how much it hurts. You may have to golf more this coming year. Stick to it. You can do it.
