Playing By Feel?
While teaching my students, if I have heard this phrase once, I have heard is a thousand times, "That doesn't feel good". My immediate comment in return is, "But did it feel correct"?
Most players develop their games around their feel. They want their shots to feel good or should I say familiar. They want to be comfortable and therefore they resist changing their swing.
Where does feel some from anyway? Your feel comes from your experiences and your habits. The more you do something a certain way, the stronger your feel becomes making any change unfamiliar and uncomfortable.
When I am teaching, I want my students to know the correct way to swing the club and to learn the correct body positions while doing it. While they are learning this, I constantly ask them WHAT they feel. Notice I don’t ask them how it feels, (In most cases, how it feels relates to the ball contact and not the swing itself) I am really not interested in if the shot feels good or bad, but rather if the seeing feels correct of incorrect. REMEMBER, IN GOLF YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF THE BALL, BUT RATHER THE MOVEMENT OF THE GOLF CLUB.
In learning a new motor skill, you must teach your muscles to feel the correct movements and positions. When learning golf, you have to place the club and your body into the correct positions before you can learn the correct feel. The correct positions may NOT feel good the first, second, or even 10th time you use them. However, with repetition you can change your feel and ultimately change your swing.
The quicker a person realizes this fact, the quicker he/she will improve.
The correct positions and movements must come before feel!
Correct positions create correct feel.
