The forgotten fundamental: Grip Pressure


Tell me the truth now, how many of you have ever hit a poor shot and thought, "My grip pressure was wrong." Well I’m here to tell you that many shots are hit poorly because of poor grip pressure or a change in grip pressure during the stroke. Especially in putting and other short game shots. Let me explain.

Like proper grip position, proper grip pressure is critical to consistent and quality shot making. I remember watching Greg Norman lose the 1986 Masters at Augusta National to Jack Nicklaus when he hit his approach shot to the 18th green went wild right into the spectator grand stand. After the round he claimed his grip pressure became too tight causing his arms to block the shot to the right. Although in the heat of the battle, he didn’t stop it from happening, Norman sensed that his grip pressure had changed causing that wayward shot.

You may not have the feel and touch of Greg Norman, but you too can sense proper grip pressure if you tune into it.

To determine what the proper grip pressure is, take your normal grip and address position. Now lift the club waist high and make several circles with the clubhead. By doing this you create the proper pressure to control the length of the club that you are holding. Now take several practice swings keeping your grip pressure constant throughout. Add this procedure to your pre-shot routine and I believe you’ll see very positive results.

Keys to proper grip pressure:
  • Enough pressure to control the length of the club and the speed that you are going to swing.
  • Note: Your grip pressure may change from shot to shot, but should never change during a shot.
  • Even pressure in both hands
  • Constant pressure throughout the swing.
  • Pressure should be in your hands, NOT your arms.
  • Keep your arms and shoulders relaxed while holding the club with your fingers.
  • Putts and chips require the same amount of grip pressure than full swings shots.
  • Usually pitch shots require softer grip pressure than full swing shots.
  • Practice to develop feel and awareness
