USGolfer.net Golf Tip for September 2002.
Position #3 Top of Backswing
Last month I wrote about the takeaway and the waist high position. To review, the waist high position has the chest turned away from the target and over the back leg. The club is held at waist high with the shaft aligned with your feet and parallel with the target line. Your hands and arms remain in front of the chest and trunk just like they were at address.
Once you have spent time on training your body to get to the correct waist high position, you are ready to finish the back swing. From the waist high position, allow your trail arm to begin folding. The folding of the trailing elbow is what takes the club to the top of back-swing position. There are two very important points to remember here. First, you want to keep the trail arm straight until you have reached the waist high position. Just past waist high the trail elbow should begin bending up to 90 degrees but NO FURTHER. This will maintain the width of your swing, which is a must in achieving consistently solid ball contact and proper club-head speed.
Second, you must stay in your posture as the trail elbow folds. Maintain your spine angle by keeping your pelvis tilted forward and by maintaining the flex in your knees. Many players begin to reverse their weight back to their forward leg during this move. Concentrate on turning to a balanced position over your back leg when taking the club to the top and you will be able to complete the back-swing properly.
Once you have reached the top of back-swing position your hands should still be in front of the chest and the triangle formed by your arms and shoulders at address remains intact.
This entire lesson may seem a bit mechanical, however, if done properly, the top of back swing position occurs from the momentum of the club on the take away. Use the following drill to achieve to feel how the club can get to the top through momentum. Address the a tee with a five iron. From the proper set-up, push the club forward approximately 24" toward the target. From this position, turn back to your waist high position and allow the arms to swing freely to the top of back-swing. This will help you gain the feel of your arms and the club reaching the top through the momentum of the swing.
Now you are ready to begin the down and forward move to the ball. We will discuss this move and the impact position in the next lesson. Stay tuned and good luck.
