USGolfer.net Golf Tip for September, 2001.
Hit Solid, Crisp Iron Shots.
This should be the goal of all golfers, however, I think that it is rarely what they are trying to achieve. Many of the students I teach say their 1st goal is just simply to "hit the ball". But, as we all know, just hitting the ball doesnt translate into good shot making or good golf. Therefore, you must learn and understand what to do to hit solid shots.
In order to hit the ball solidly, the shaft of the club MUST be leaning forward (toward the target) when it strikes the ball (at impact). This position applies pressure into the golf ball causing it to jump off of the clubface and down the fairway. To get to this critical position at impact, your hands must lead in the downswing leaving the clubhead behind until after it strikes the ball. At impact, your forward arm and hand will line up with the shaft of the club forming a straight line from your leading shoulder to the clubhead.
In your next practice session, use the following impact drill and you will find yourself hitting more solid shots in no time at all:
1) Place the ball in the middle of your stance.
2) Place slightly more weight on your forward foot allowing your hands to hang over the knee on your forward leg and the your leading arm to line up with the club-shaft.
3) Open your hips slightly while keeping your shoulders square to the target line. This will help create the feeling of rotation through impact.
4) Starting from this position, swing the club halfway back with your arms and shoulders allowing your body to pivot. Then simply swing the club back down to the starting position with your hands leading and your forward arm and shaft in straight line. Remember, you are not swinging for distance so swing easy. The goal is solid contact.
After you have hit 15 shots this way and are feeling solid contact, take your normal address position and make full swings. Compare your feeling at impact to the feeling of the impact drill. Continue this practice routine until impact with your regular swing feels solid. Make sure you are doing this drill correctly and have patience with yourself. Changes take time to perfect. Good luck!!
