USGolfer.net Golf Tip for November, 2001.
Playing Golf Isn't Just Luck
Playing golf isn't just luck. It is a result of proper preparation on and off the golf course. With the off season just starting, now is the time to set your off season resolution for your golf game. Don't wait until the warmth of spring to arrive to start your preparation. To play your best golf this season, you should begin preparing yourself right now in the following three areas:
First - Prepare your body. Most golfers overlook physical conditioning because the game doesn't appear to require brute strength, lighting speed, or tremendous endurance. However this is an area where most people fail in their attempt to improve. Like all other sports (motor skills), good golf requires your muscles to respond properly to the signals your brain sends to them. When your muscles are weak they cannot respond properly and at times will even respond spastically to your instructions.
When I teach, I always ask my students to tell me what they felt after they make a swing. Ninety percent of the time the student will respond with a shrug of the shoulders meaning he of she doesn't know. If you don't know what you are feeling how then are you going to make a correct movements with the club? Take time now to condition so that your body is ready when the weather is.
Second - Prepare your game by studying and learning the games fundamentals. You're probably wondering how you can practice your fundamentals with snow covering the ground. Well this can be some of the best practice you can do. Get in front of a mirror and put yourself in the proper set-up position. Place a ball on the ground and practice your grip, your posture and alignment. If you are not sure what you should look like get some picture of the best players in the world from one of your golf magazines. Study their positions and copy their positions in front of the mirror. Most swing mistakes are made before your ever take the club back.
Third - Prepare your mind so that you are mentally ready to play this season. I'm sure that most of your are wondering what this means. Remember, every good or bad shot starts in the brain. If you cant see yourself hitting a good shot then you probably wont. Visualize yourself hitting perfect golf shots. Play your favorite golf course in your mind. Hitting those shots you want to hit and scoring the way you want to score. Prepare a strategy for each hole deciding what club you should hit and where you want the ball to go. No good basketball team or football team goes on the floor or field without a game plan and neither should you. Prepare plans for the courses you plan and visualize yourself following those plans. You will be amazed how this will help you manage your game and the golf course better.
